My two friends and I volunteered at Terrapin Beer Factory (a Athens, GA local brewery) and after less than two hours of work the three of us walked out with 73 bottles of free beer.

Unpaid internships aren’t just for students who are socially retarded in the corporate world. They have the good intentions of providing real work experience without the high pressure of dependency along with giving kids contacts and references. But what is really happening is that Companies know they don’t have to pay interns. Currently, I’m working at two non-profit organizations so the unpaid aspect is a little more understandable but when places like SNL, CBS, Bravo, or even the Martha Stewart Show offer internships. Students fight tooth and nail to get them because it’s a golden ticket on a resume so they’ll happily do it free. I’d work for free at SNL who wouldn’t? But not only do those places not pay, they require students do the internships for credit. So basically students are paying these big executive companies who have incomprehensible amounts of money to scan, run errands and get Martha Stewart some coffee. Without a doubt interns are exploited more often than not. It’s inescapable and the only good advice I’ve heard is to try to exploit back- network as much as possible, bank on references and contacts, steal pens, and try to get some free t-shirts if you can. Interns Unite!

If interns are doing valuable work, pay them.

PLEASE PAY YOUR INTERNS!! Especially if they are seniors, have two internships, and are soon faceing the ‘in between phase’ of getting cut off and not having a full time job. So at least they’ll have some means of survival. And by ‘they’ I mean me.
